The UK general election proved to be traffic gold for national newspaper websites in May, led by the Telegraph whose readership soared by 23%.

Telegraph.co.uk reported a 22.58% month-on-month rise in daily unique browsers to 4,907,466 in May.

It was also strong month for the Mirror’s national websites which saw the second biggest jump with its audience rising 16.33% month-on-month to 4,347,126.

All the national newspaper websites audited by ABC recorded rises last month, with Independent.co.uk up 13.11% to 2,637,959, theguardian.com up 4.17% to 7,504,946 and Mail Online up 1.27% to 13,812,919.

The Evening Standard saw daily unique browser numbers rise 13.3% month-on-month to 443,465, while free sheet Metro’s web traffic rose rose 11.16% to 1,453,532.

Richard Desmond’s Express.co.uk reported a 7.49% climb to 839,410, while stablemate Dailystar.co.uk rose 14.12% to 580,168.
