Telecom tower damage: HC issues notice to Punjab, Centre on Reliance Jio plea

Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday issued notices for reply to the central government and Punjab government on a petition filed by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), seeking action against vandalism of its mobile towers and disruption of telecom services in Punjab.

Amid the ongoing farmers agitation against farm laws over 1,500 mobile towers had been damaged in Punjab during the past few days. The State has a total of 21,306 mobile towers spread across its 22 districts.

Aashish Chopra, counsel for the petitioner told, The Hindu that the court has issued notice for filing reply to the Centre and state governments by February 8.  

The state of Punjab through its chief secretary, Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Telecommunications and the Punjab Director General of Police has been made respondents in the case by the petitioner. 

In its petition the company submitted the miscreants indulging in vandalism have been instigated and aided by vested interests and our business rivals.  It added these acts of violence have endangered the lives of thousands of its employees and caused damage and disruption to the vital communications infrastructure, sales and service outlets run by its subsidiaries.
