Telco plans upgrades for 5G in Newcastle CBD

Optus 5G equipment set up at another location.

A plan by telecommunications company Optus to upgrade a Newcastle CBD base station with new 4G and 5G equipment is on public exhibition.

Optus wants to install three 4G/5G panel antennas that are 2.6 metres long, as well as four 5G panel antennas less than a metre long each, onto its existing rooftop facility in Bolton Street.

An Optus spokesperson said it was part of the company's national 5G roll-out plan, which aimed to deliver 5G to its customers in Newcastle CBD in 2022.

The spokesperson said the new equipment would deliver "faster speeds and improved bandwidth, meaning customers can connect to multiple devices at once for gaming, streaming, learning and working."

Public feedback on the plan can be submitted by emailing community@axicom.com.au or by calling (02) 9495 9000.

Hard copy submissions can be posted to Level 1, 110 Pacific Highway, St Leonards NSW 2065.

Submissions close on Friday, July 30.
