Telangana: Mild tremors hit Mancherial

HYDERABAD: An earthquake of 4.0 magnitude on the Richter scale, which was described as having occurred 45 km north-east of Karimnagar on Saturday afternoon, resulted in people scurrying out of their houses to safety.

The impact of the tremors were felt mainly in Mancherial at 2.04 pm. On experiencing the tremors, people ran out of their houses at College Road, Sunnambattiwada, Srirampur, Sitarampur and SCCL Nagarjuna Colony. There was, however, no damage on account of the mild quake.

The National Centre for Seismology said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 20 km, with Peddapalli as the epicentre. The quake occurred in the Godavari rift area.

According to locals in Mancherial town, the tremors were felt for just a couple of seconds. Since it falls in the Singareni coal mines area, locals initially assumed them to be blasts connected to mining.

Seismologists said that the seismic activity in the place should not be seen as an unusual activity. It was described as a ‘tectonic earthquake’ and that it posed no risk.
