HYDERABAD: With the Union cabinet greenlighting the ₹4,445 crore PM MITRA (Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel) parks scheme for setting up seven textile parks across the country, Telangana is gearing up to bag a spot in the coveted seven. The scheme was announced in the 2021-22 Union Budget by the finance minister.
Telangana will be sending a proposal to the Centre soon. Apart from Telangana, states like Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan, Assam, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are in the race.
“They will take proposals from states for evaluation now and select the seven best of the lot. We will be sending our proposal for the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park (KMTP) in Warangal within the next three months,” Telangana IT and industries principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan said.
During the Budget announcement, Ranjan had said that KMTP is expected to be a front runner in garnering support from the Centre as the project ticks all the eligibility boxes.
Spread over 1,200 acres in Warangal, KMTP , is being developed on a vertically integrated model to cover the complete textile & apparel value chain.
As per the Centre’s norms, parks vying for the MITRA scheme have to be spread over at least 1,000 acres and have core infrastructure such as incubation centre, plug & play facility, developed factory sites, roads, power, water and waste water system, common processing house & common effluent treatment plant, design centre and testing centres, among others.
These parks will also need to have support infrastructure such as workers’ hostels and housing, logistics park, warehousing, medical, training & skill development facilities. Each park will have a potential to create around 1-2 lakh jobs.
In fact, KMTP has already attracted some marquee investments such as Kerala’s Kitex Group, which manufactures kids apparel and expects its unit to begin commercial operations from November 2022.
