Telangana: Agnipath protesters in jail to get legal aid, Congress

HYDERABAD: Students and unemployed youths who were jailed after the violent Agnipath protest at Secunderabad Railway station on June 17, will be given legal support, the Congress has said.

The party has decided to provide legal help to these candidates to get them out of jail and “save their future”. For this purpose, the party has hired the services of senior advocate Rajnikanth Reddy of the Telangana high court.

Also, over 2,000 students who are under the radar of the railway police and are facing cases for Agnipath related protest-cum-violence, will get legal help if they desire so. A toll-free number 99199-31993 has been set up by Congress for the students or parents to register the names of candidates seeking legal help. The party is also planning to provide counselling to the students in jail.

There are 55 students and unemployed youths in Chanchalguda jail with various cases booked against them by the railway police under various sections of IPC.

Telangana Congress president and Malkajgiri MP A Revanth Reddy along with party leaders met the army aspirants in Chanchalguda central prison here on Friday, and assured them that “Congress will fight their cases in the court”.

Almost all the students belong to SC, ST and BC communities and a majority are from Lambada thandas. They had passed physical and medical tests and were waiting for a written examination, which was not conducted for two years due to Covid pandemic, Revanth said.

“They are students and their future is at stake. They took to the protest due to the wrong decision of the Narendra Modi government which came out with a short-term Agnipath scheme in the armed forces,” he said. The TRS government too should withdraw the couple of cases booked by the state police against the aspirants, he said.
