Telangana 2BHK housing scheme explained: Who can get free two-bedroom houses, eligibility rules, documents needed as government plans 1 lakh new homes in Hyderabad?

The Telangana government has renewed its focus on affordable housing after distributing ownership documents under its flagship two-bedroom housing scheme and announcing plans to build one lakh additional homes for the urban poor in Hyderabad, reports The Times of India.

The programme, popularly known as the Telangana 2BHK Housing Scheme, aims to provide free two-bedroom houses to economically weaker families who do not have permanent homes. With fresh allotments being handed over and a major expansion announced, many residents are now asking: Who is eligible, what benefits are available, and how does the scheme work?

"I am delighted that today we have handed over two-bedroom houses," Azharuddin said. "I would like to thank the CM for carrying this work forward. We have provided homes to many people here, including those with special needs and individuals with disabilities. We have recognised and addressed these special cases," he added.

The event marked the formal handover of allotment documents to beneficiaries, with the government stressing that deserving and marginalised families would continue to receive priority.

What is the Telangana 2BHK Housing Scheme?

The Telangana 2BHK Housing Scheme is a welfare programme launched to provide free housing to poor families across the state.

Unlike many housing schemes where beneficiaries are required to contribute part of the construction cost, the Telangana government bears the entire expense of building and allotting the houses.

Each housing unit typically includes:

  • Two bedrooms
  • One hall
  • One kitchen
  • Two toilets

The scheme is implemented in both rural and urban areas. In cities such as Hyderabad, where land is scarce, multi-storey apartment complexes are often constructed to accommodate more beneficiaries.

Who is eligible for Telangana's free housing scheme?

According to the scheme guidelines, the primary beneficiaries are economically weaker families that do not own permanent houses.

Eligibility generally includes:

  • Families living below the poverty line (BPL)
  • Residents of Telangana
  • Households without a permanent home
  • Applicants meeting the prescribed income and residency requirements

The government also gives preference to vulnerable groups, including:

  • Persons with disabilities
  • Widows
  • Senior citizens
  • Scheduled Castes (SCs)
  • Scheduled Tribes (STs)
  • Other deserving categories identified by authorities

Beneficiary selection is carried out through verification by district administrations and local bodies to ensure that housing benefits reach eligible families.

What documents are usually required?

While requirements may vary depending on local authorities and allotment drives, applicants are generally expected to provide:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Residence proof
  • Income certificate
  • Ration card
  • Caste certificate (if applicable)
  • Disability certificate (if applicable)
  • Other documents sought by district authorities

Officials verify the documents before finalising beneficiary lists.

Telangana plans 1 lakh new houses in Hyderabad

The state government is now preparing a major expansion of the housing programme.

Telangana transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the government plans to construct 100,000 additional housing units for poor families in Hyderabad.

Speaking during a recent distribution programme, Prabhakar said housing development and employment opportunities would be linked through the expansion.

"Under the leadership of the Hyderabad District Collector, we have handed over the necessary documents for projects that had been pending for years," Prabhakar said.

"We have decided to construct 100,000 housing units for the poor in Hyderabad, creating homes where employment opportunities exist, and have identified land for this purpose," he added.

According to the minister, the government is also working to resolve long-pending administrative issues to ensure smoother and more transparent housing allocations.

Why the scheme is important

For thousands of low-income families, housing remains one of the biggest financial challenges. The Telangana 2BHK Housing Scheme seeks to reduce that burden by providing fully funded homes to eligible beneficiaries.

With the government now planning one lakh new housing units in Hyderabad, the scheme is expected to benefit many more families who are currently living in rented accommodation, temporary shelters, or inadequate housing conditions.

The latest announcement signals a significant expansion of Telangana's affordable housing efforts, with the focus remaining on economically weaker and socially vulnerable sections of society.
