A pair of teenagers have been charged with firing metal-piercing bullets at a vehicle they tied to carjack Monday in the West Town neighborhood.
The boys, both 17, stepped out of a vehicle about 12:17 a.m. in the 600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue with at least one of them displaying a handgun, according to Chicago police.
They stepped in front of a Jeep Cherokee, attempting to stop it, but the driver began to make a U-turn, police said. At that point, one of the teens fired a handgun, striking the vehicle about three times, police said. The man in the car was not hit.
The driver of the vehicle was reportedly a driver for Uber who had just dropped off his last passenger of the night, WGN-TV reported.
Officers responded to the scene and arrested the teens, who were on foot, in the 400 block of North Racine Avenue, police said.
Each teen was charged with four felony counts each of possession of a stolen vehicle, criminal damage, attempted vehicular highjacking and aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said.
One of the teens was also charged with misdemeanor counts of unauthorized use of a weapon and criminal trespass to land, police said. He was cited for possession of a high capacity magazine, metal-piercing bullets and a laser sight.
The teens appeared in juvenile court on Tuesday.
