Teens charged in NW Side carjacking

Charges were filed in a Feb. 9 carjacking. | Sun-Times file

Two teenage boys, ages 15 and 16, face carjacking charges after they allegedly confronted a man at gunpoint Tuesday evening in Cragin on the Northwest Side.

One of the teens allegedly pointed a gun at the vicim as he sat his car in the 1900 block of North La Crosse Avenue, Chicago police said.

The 48-year-old complied and the teens drove off in his 2005 Mazda, police said.

Officers tried to pull over the Mazda about a block away, but the car stopped and the teens ran away. They were arrested after a short foot chase and a weapon was recovered, police said.

Both teens faces a vehicular highjacking charge, but the 15-year-old also faces a gun charge.

They were expected to appear in juvenile court later Wednesday.

Last month, police Supt. David Brown outlined a plan to address the rise in carjackings, which have more than doubled in the past year.
