Teens caught on CCTV trying to burgle Leeds house together

A pair of teenagers have avoided detention after trying to burgle a Leeds house together.

Leeds Crown Court heard Charlie Waite, 19, Jack Heggerty, 18, and another person were captured on CCTV approaching a house on Temple Avenue in Temple Newsam in the early hours of the morning on July 27 last year.

Carmel Pearson, prosecuting, said there was an attempt to open the front door before the trio moved to a window at the side of the house.

She said it was later found damaged and it looked like there had been an unsuccessful attempt to force it.

The occupants were home at the time.

Waite and Heggerty were identified from the footage.

They pleaded guilty to attempted burglary.

Probation officer Mick Berry said they both described their behaviour as disguisting.

Waite has four previous convictions for 12 offences, including burglaries.

He was sentenced to 20 months' detention in a young offender institution in October 2018 and released in March this year.

James Littlehales, mitigating for Waite, said his client was using drugs at the time of the offence but is now clean.

Heggerty, who the court heard had gotten in with the wrong crowd, has no previous convictions.

Waite was sentenced to four months' detention in a young offender institution, suspended for 12 months.

He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work and 36 hours at an attendance centre.

Heggerty was ordered to complete 50 hours of unpaid work and a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
