Teenagers stopped by police after they travel 70 miles to climb Snowdonia mountain

Police stopped a group of friends who had travelled almost 70 miles from Ellesmere Port to climb mount Tryfan.

The five Covid rule-breakers - four who were teenagers - were on their way to Ogwen Cottage in Snowdonia to climb Tryfan.

However the friends didn't get to their destination and were stopped by special constables - North Wales Live reports.

Officers reported the group, who had travelled from Ellesmere Port in Cheshir e, for flouting lockdown regulations.

A statement posted on the North Wales Police Special Constabulary twitter page, said: “Our team continue to come across motorists travelling in breach of COVID regs’.

“This evening our SC road safety unit have reported 5 people incl’ 4 teenagers who had travelled from Ellesmere Port to Ogwen Cottage in Snowdonia to climb Tryfan in the dark in trainers!”

Today the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner spoke out after “selfish” people have continued to flout the regulations this weekend after flocking to beauty spots across the region.

By Saturday lunchtime, more than 100 cars were reported to have been turned away from Moel Famau, with some driving past road closed signs.

Meanwhile, in Snowdonia car parks have been closed to deter visitors.

Until now the police response has been guided by the so-called four Es, to engage and find out why the rules were being broken, explain the rules and rise, encourage people to behave responsibly and to only take enforcement action as a last resort.

The regulations allow for fixed penalty notices to be issued - with fines ranging from £60 to £10,000.
