Teenagers charged after children's playground train in Mount Vernon Park burns down

Two teenagers have been charged after a wooden train in a children's playground in Mount Vernon Park burned down.

Fire crews were called out to the east end to extinguish the blaze after being alerted just after midnight this morning.

Police have since confirmed to Glasgow Live: "We received a report of a fire in Mount Vernon Park, Glasgow, around 11.50pm on Sunday, 31 May 2020. Nobody was injured.

"Two men (aged 18 and 19) have been charged in connection with the incident.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

A volunteer for Mount Vernon Community Hall shared his sadness after discovering the scene and confirmed a fundraiser has already been launched by local residents in a bid to have the popular kids' train reinstated.

He said: "A couple of the local kids have found out and they've been in tears, so it's a real shame.

"A lot of people have said 'we'd happily give you money' to hopefully at least put some bits of the train back.

"That's certainly taking the edge off it, good positive comments and lots of offers of help too."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed: “We were alerted at 12.09am on Monday, June 1 to reports of a fire near Kenmuir Drive, Mount Vernon.

"Operations Control mobilised one appliance to an outdoor playpark at a community centre where crews extinguished the fire.

"Crews left after ensuring the area was made safe."
