Teenager wins $30,000 after parents buy her lottery scratchcard as stocking filler

A lucky teenager won $30,000 after her parents purchased a cheap lottery scratchcard as a stocking filler.

The unnamed 18-year-old from Germantown, Maryland, US, was gifted a $3 (£2.50) Peppermint Payout scratchcard by her parents on Christmas Day.

When the teenager woke up she opened up her stocking and won on three lucky scratch cards winning $1 (80p), $2 (£1.65) and $30,000 (£25,000).

The college student was delighted to discover she had won on all three - especially the jackpot.

She said: "It was shocking and a weird feeling. It was surreal."

Her dad, who had bought the scratchcards at a store in Montgomery County, revealed he gave her daughter them as a cheap stocking filler.

He said: "We gave them to her as a stocking stuffer."

The store is set to receive a bonus of $300 (£250) from lottery officials after the impressive jackpot payout.

Maryland Lottery said in a statement: "An 18-year-old Germantown woman came to Maryland Lottery headquarters with her parents in tow, eager to share her exciting experience.

"The Lottery novice won big the first time she played a scratch-off and was claiming a $30,000 top prize on the Peppermint Payout game.

"For her first Christmas as an adult, the lucky woman received a few scratch-offs from her parents.

"She had luck on three of the instant tickets, winning $1, $2, and $30,000."

However, the canny teenager is not planning a huge shopping spree with her winnings as she revealed the $30,000 (£25,000) will be going into her savings.

Maryland Lottery said: "The Montgomery County resident is a college student majoring in Digital Arts.

"She plans to put the scratch-off prize into her savings account."

The store is set to receive a bonus for selling the prize-winning ticket after the teen collected her winnings.

They added: "The Montgomery County store will receive a $300 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $30,000 top-prize winning instant ticket.

"The Peppermint Payout game is still loaded with sweet prizes. Since it went on sale on October 17, players have found four of the $3 game's eight $30,000 top prizes.

"The game also has more than 450,000 unclaimed prizes ranging from $3 to $500."

Maryland lottery revealed another winner came from Shoppers located at 18066 Mateny Road in Germantown.

The lucky winner won $2,867 (£2,350).
