Teenager who lost her sight two years ago celebrates GCSE success

A teenager who lost her sight during her time at high school has overcome the odds by passing her GCSEs.

Freya Gavin, from Old Trafford, had been able to see when she first joined Chorlton High School in 2016.

But after losing her sight in her third year at the school, Freya had to learn in new ways to complete her courses.

"I had to learn braille and work in different ways, but I picked it up quite quickly and made the adjustments.

"You can't do anything really apart from make adjustments."

Freya passed all her GCSE courses, and gained the grades she needed to study psychology, sociology and PE at college.

She had been worried heading into school to pick up her results, but was relieved once she realised she had the grades she was looking for.

Freya added: "I was very nervous, I didn't know what to expect.

"But I thought that whatever I had done, I had worked the hardest that I could have so that's all I could do.

"It's a big relief because it's a long summer waiting for your results, when all you want to do is know.

"I feel like I can start to relax now and start to get ready for September."

Chorlton High School celebrated a day of success with some outstanding results - including two students who achieved straight grade 9s, Emily Gibson and Tyler Eckersall.

It rounded off a challenging 18 months for the students in the pandemic, with shutdowns, home learning and self-isolation periods.

Tyler said: "I gave a lot over the last year to revision, made sacrifices, but it has paid off because I got straight 9s. I was hoping for it but the closer I got the more I doubted myself.

"It's been really difficult for us all. Year 11 would have been difficult anyway but then we had to deal with a global pandemic."

Headteacher Zoe Morris added: "These results are so well deserved, and we could not be any prouder of them.

"They can celebrate today knowing that their hard work, resilience and determination has paid off."
