Teenager who died in bridge fall was a 'lovely young man'

Tributes have been paid to a 19-year-old teenager who died after falling from a bridge this morning.

Police were called to the scene on Oakdale Road in Wallasey just after 7am.

The tragedy meant the Wallasey Tunnel was closed for several hours, and motorists were advised to use the Birkenhead Tunnel instead.

The man has been named locally as Daniel, who it is understood lived in Wallasey not far from the scene.

One local described the teen as "always smiling and polite."

He was "such a lovely young man," she said.

On the ECHO Facebook account, many people came forward to extend their sympathies to Daniel's family.

One wrote: "So sorry to your family, thinking of you all.

"I feel for [the] young man and his family it's going be tough time for the family.

"I hope you all get good support."

Another said: "Very sad news.

"When are they going to cover these footbridges and fence off road bridges in high risk areas in order to stop things like this happening?"

Today, Merseyside Police and the city coroner where jointly investigating the tragedy.

The death has been referred for an inquest, but that will not open until later this week.

The man, 19, was treated at the scene and was taken to hospital with "serious injuries".

Sadly the man was pronounced dead at hospital.

Police say investigations are taking place and CCTV is being looked.

Witnesses and anyone who has any dashcam footage is urged to contact police on 101.
