Teenager taken to hospital after coming off bike and crashing into railings in Gateshead

A teenage boy was taken to hospital after flying over the handlebars of his bike and crashing into railings in Gateshead.

An ambulance was called to the scene at the junction of Saltwell Road and Lobley Hill Road just after 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The boy had suffered injuries to his leg and face after crashing into railings by the side of the road.

He was placed on a stretcher and treated on the scene before he was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

It is believed the teenager had been cycling with a group of friends when the collision happened.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "A passerby called us at 4.35pm.

"We sent an ambulance to Saltwell Road to treat a patient who had gone over the handlebars of his bicycle and suffered face and leg injuries.

"He was treated by crews before being taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital."
