Teenager taken to hospital after being knocked off his bike by a car in Newport

A teenage cyclist has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after he was involved in a crash in Newport this morning.

A 14-year-old boy on a bike was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Meriva this morning at around 8.30am on Tredegar Park Drive in Duffryn, near St Brides Medical Centre.

The teenager sustained minor leg and head injuries and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. His condition is not known.

A statement from Gwent Police said: "A road traffic collision involving a Vauxhall Meriva car and a cyclist was reported to us at 8.30am this morning, Wednesday November 11, on Tredegar Park Drive in Newport.

"The cyclist, a 14-year-old boy, sustained minor leg and head injuries and was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for treatment."

It comes after the family of a teenage boy who was killed after being knocked off his bike called for changes to the road where he died while cycling.

Joshua Fletcher, who was 16 years old , died after a collision with a car on the Southern Distributor Road (SDR) in October.

This week, Joshua's family started a petition calling for changes to be made to the stretch of the road where he died.

"The family are devastated. I want the council to rethink the road as this is not the first time this has happened. Something needs doing," Joshua's aunt Avril Fletcher said.
