Teenager taken to hospital after being hit by a bus in Walker

A teenage boy was taken to hospital after he was knocked over by a bus on a busy Walker road.

Police officers closed off part of Welbeck Road following the collision on Wednesday afternoon.

The teenager was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary with a head injury, although his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

"At about 2.30pm we received a report that a teenage boy had been involved in a collision with a bus on Welbeck Road in Walker," said a Northumbria Police spokesperson.

"Emergency services attended and the boy was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening."

The force added that the road was closed for a "short period" of time following the collision, which involved a Stagecoach vehicle.

"Our thoughts are for the welfare of the person involved and we are assisting the police with their enquiries into the circumstances," said a spokesperson for the transport firm.

The collision occurred on the lengthy road which links up Walker and Byker.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We sent three ambulance teams to the scene and took one patient to the RVI with a head injury.”
