Teenager suffers severe burns at Raymond Terrace

A teenager was air-lifted to a Sydney hospital in a critical condition after he suffered serious burns on Sunday night.

Emergency crews were called to Raymond Terrace about 8pm after reports that a 17-year-old boy had sustained significant burns from an accident involving a backyard fire.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the teenager before the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the area.

A statement from the chopper service on Monday said the 17-year-old had suffered life threatening burns "to his entire body".

The helicopter's Critical Care Medical Team stabilised the boy.

They placed him in an induced coma and on life support before flying him to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise money for the teenager's family - particularly to help his mother cover accommodation and travel costs in Sydney while the 17-year-old is in hospital.

In a post on the page on Monday, a family member wrote that the boy had become "engulfed in flames".

"He has suffered terrible burns to a large part of his body and will need to stay in Sydney for the next few weeks. Possibly longer," she wrote.

"However, he needs his mum there! She has no car or licence and will be relying on grandparents and family members to get to and from Sydney to be with him and her other 2 children here in Raymond Terrace."
