Teenager suffers burns when petrol ignites near outdoor fire

A teenager has been taken to hospital with burns after petrol ignited outside a home at Wallsend on the weekend.

An Ambulance NSW spokeswoman told the Newcastle Herald on Monday that two paramedic crews were called to the scene at a house in Fryar Crescent at about midnight on Sunday, where they found a girl with burns to her face, legs and arms.

The girl is believed to be 15 or 16 years old.

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment before the Westpac Rescue Helicopter air-lifted her to Westmead Children's Hospital in a stable condition.

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter statement on Monday morning said the teenager's burns were sustained when a petrol can ignited near an outdoor fire at the Wallsend home.

Two other people were taken to John Hunter Hospital with minor injuries, an Ambulance NSW spokeswoman said.

The teenager is believed to have been visiting a friend at the time of the incident - the two other people injured are understood to be her friends.
