Teenager Stops Speaking To Mother After Learning She Hid Their College Acceptance Letter

College for many of us was, currently is or maybe will be one of the most memorable moments of our lives. In most cases, it’s the first time when we learn to live on our own, separated from our parents, and meet new friends. But it’s also important to note that it’s quite a stressful moment in our lives, especially while waiting for acceptance letters from our dream universities.

This Reddit user is no different; they shared their experience online after learning that their mother had hidden the fact that they had been accepted to their dream university, which led to quite a heated argument.

They added that their mom is not talking to them anymore and after speaking with her therapist, told them that they inflicted trauma on her

A few days ago, one Reddit user shared their story online asking community members if they were being a jerk for telling their mom that she’s the worst thing that ever happened to them after finding out she hid the fact that they got accepted to their dream university. The post caught a lot of attention and collected over 7.5K upvotes and 1.3K comments.

The original poster (OP) started their story by sharing that they are 17 years old and it’s college time for them. However, OP noted that since they were 14 years old, they have often had fights with their mom about college – more specifically, mom saying that they don’t have the personality for college. Well, apparently OP got into their dream university, but didn’t know it.

OP noted that they had lost access to their email and had been relying on their mom to inform them about universities’ responses. However, finally, OP got into their mom’s phone and saw the email. They shared that they screamed like never before and told her that she’s the worst thing that has happened to them.

The community members backed up the OP and gave them the ‘Not the A-hole’ badge. “I’m a mother of a college student. Your mom is acting shamefully. She betrayed your trust and is projecting her own fears and feelings of inadequacy onto you,” one user wrote. “NTA. Make sure you call the college and accept or send your acceptance email ASAP,” another added.

Bored Panda got in touch with the author of this story u/Immediate_Land_4171 and they kindly agreed to share more insights regarding their relationship with their mom before this incident, if they had any more conversations following the argument and if they wished they had done something differently in handling the situation.

Firstly, we asked OP about the relationship between them and their mom prior to the incident and they noted that it was okay. They added that they had lots of issues prior, but she had never retaliated. “I sort of just took it, then I blew up,” they summarized.

Now speaking about whether there were any more conversations following it, OP told Bored Panda –  “Just her yelling or me yelling.” They shared that during meals they sit in silence and a few days ago, their mom just kept saying that what she was doing wasn’t wrong at all.

And finally, we asked if looking back, there is anything that they would have done differently in handling the situation, to which OP said “I would’ve thrown the phone out the window. I would’ve just left that night.”

But what do you guys think about this situation? Was mom really not in the wrong in this case, as she stated? Or does the student have every right to be mad? Share your thoughts below!
