Teenager 'saves brother's life' following West Belfast stabbing

The teenage brother of a man stabbed in the back in West Belfast has been praised for potentially "saving his life".

A 20-year-old remains in a critical condition in hospital following the incident which took place on Saturday at around 5.30pm on Corrib Avenue.

It is understood the man had been sitting with his teenage brother and friends when he was "snuck up on" from behind and stabbed numerous times.

Following the attack, the teenager acted quickly in removing his brother's clothes and stopping blood flow while he waited for paramedics to arrive and take him to hospital.

A family member of the victim said: "My brother was sitting on the curb with his brother and their friends when someone snuck up behind him and stabbed him numerous times from behind.

"Thankfully, my brother was able to think quickly and help the other by removing his clothes and stopping the bleeding until the paramedics arrived. He basically saved his life.

"As a family we never imagined anything like this would ever happen. My brother is still in a critical condition in the trauma ward and we are just praying that he will make it through this."

Police said a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for information following a stabbing incident in West Belfaston Saturday evening.

"Just before 6pm, police received a report that a man in his 20s had been stabbed in the Corrib Avenue area of the city.

"Officers responded to the call, where they found the victim with stab wounds to his back.

"He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries.

"A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was later released on bail pending further enquiries.
