A teenager's body was pulled from a canal after a huge underwater search was carried out for over two hours.
Emergency services were called to Lightbody Street, in Vauxhall, shortly before 3pm on Friday after reports a man had entered the water near Stanley Dock.
Witnesses said that the young man never resurfaced, sparking a massive response from police, paramedics and the fire service.
Specialist underwater search teams were also called to the area to assist the search alongside an air ambulance that was on standby if needed.
There were around six ambulances at the scene, as well as multiple police vans and cars, and a number of fire engines.
Crews assisted the search teams for over two hours but at around 5.30pm the search was stopped and emergency workers were seen packing up.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed a short time later that a body had been recovered and the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, the force said: "The body of an 18 year-old male has now been recovered from the canal.
"The man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
"The man's next of kin are in the process being informed.
"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident."
Earlier in the day police officers stated they had been called to the area after reports of concern for the safety of a man.
Members of the public were advised to avoid the area while crews worked at the scene.
