Teenager rescued after horror 30-foot fall down Dumfries and Galloway cliff face

A teenager was airlifted to hospital after a horror 30-foot fall down a cliff face.

The youngster suffered a broken elbow and pelvis following the accident at Auchenlarie near Gatehouse on Sunday afternoon.

Kirkcudbright Coastguard team, an ambulance and the Rescue 199 helicopter all rushed to the scene.

And the injured youngster was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Glasgow for treatment.

Senior Coastguard operations officer at Kirkcudbright Stewart Bryden, right, said: “He had fallen about 30 feet and suffered multiple injuries.

“He was with his dad, they did the right thing, they dialled 999 and there was a quick response from everyone.

“I don’t think they were from the area, he was staying at Auchenlarie.

“He was put on a stretcher and lifted into the helicopter then his dad was lifted up too.

“He was taken to Glasgow, I think he has multiple broken bones but he should be okay.

“It was a good job from everyone.”

The call-out was one of two rescues that volunteers had to deal with over the weekend.

On Friday afternoon, Kirkcudbright Lifeboat was alerted after a small boat capsized as two men returned to shore from their cabin cruiser.

The pair were thrown into the water and while one got back to the cruiser, the other was unable to due to an injury – so he was tied to the boat by his pal.

Lifeboat operations manager John Collins said: “He had put a rope round him and tied him on.

“He was cold and had been in the water for at least half an hour when we got there. I think it was a member of the public who saw it and dialled 999.

“It was 17 minutes for us to get the boat launched, which is about as best it can be, then another five minutes or so for us to get there.

“It was only about 100 yards from the shore so rather than put him on the boat and cause him further injury we just towed the boat in.”

Once ashore, the man was handed over to the ambulance crew, with the lifeboat team going to recover the capsized boat.

Mr Collins added: “It was stopped near Gibbhill by a fisherman. He wound his line around it and stopped it – I think it was the only thing he caught all day!”
