Teenager rescued after becoming trapped by the tide in Whitley Bay

A teenager was rescued by lifesaving crews after she became trapped by the tide along the coast.

The 18-year-old was on a concrete ledge, at the bottom of a sea wall in Whitley Bay , while the tide was coming in.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) and Cullercoats RNLI Lifeboat were sent to the scene to help after the alarm was raised at around 11.15am on Wednesday.

The TVLB crew managed to find the youngster and safely led her to the lifeboat, which then took her ashore.

TVLB captain Peter Lilley said: "We got a call from the police who were concerned about the safety of an 18-year-old female along the Whitley Bay coast.

"Brigade members quickly located her. She was on a ledge on the bottom of a sea wall. Brigade members used water rescue techniques to safely take her across a shallow sandbank to the lifeboat.

"They used personal flotation devices - a form of life jacket - and safety lines and huddled around her to walk her to the boat.

"Given the incoming tide, time was of the essence. At that stage, the conditions were good but if this had been 20 or 30 minutes later, it would have been a more complex rescue. She would have been more difficult to reach.

"The lifeboat transported the casualty safely back ashore and into the care of North East Ambulance Service."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson added: "At about 11.20am on Wednesday police received a report of a concern for female at the promenade at Whitley Bay.

"It was reported that the female was trapped by the incoming tide. With assistance from the coastguard the woman was helped back to shore safely."
