Teenager reduced to tears in job interview after being told outfit was 'inappropriate'

The furious mum of a teenage girl "brought to tears" during a job interview is "disgusted" at how her daughter was treated.

The 18-year-old, who does not wish to be named, had an interview for a bar role at The Stockton Hotel in Hartburn on Tuesday, which was cut short because of an alleged dress code violation.

Her mum, 37, has shared how the teen was left "sobbing" after the landlady made "comments about her skirt".

The comments - which the mum says were flagrantly inappropriate - came as the proprietor questioned the teen on her previous waitressing experience.

But the Stockton hotel has hit back, claiming the teen's outfit was more suited to "nightclubbing" than waiting tables, Teeside Live reports.

“It wasn’t appropriate for an interview - it was very, very short,” licensee Andrew Mark said.

Although, he admitted: “Maybe we could have handled it a bit better.

The 37-year-old mum said the interviewers should have raised their issue earlier.

"If you didn’t like what she was wearing as you mentioned, as soon as she walked in, why not just end the interview there,” the mum, from Thorpe Thewles, said.

The teen found the job through employment site Indeed and received an interview confirmation at the hotel in Hartburn.

She was dropped off at the pub by her mum, but not long after she called her mum in tears.

She continued sobbing throughout their car journey as she explained to her mum what had happened during the interview and the "comments about her skirt".

The 18-year-old - who just came to the end of her art and fashion college course - wore a "brown skirt with flowers on, black tights, Dr Martens boots, high neck black top with an oversized leather jacket".

But during the interview she said she felt "uncomfortable" and wrapped her coat around her legs".

When questioned about her previous experience, she told licensee Jane Darby she had worked in a café.

But when prompted for more information the teen said she was “panicking and forgot the name of the café”.

“She was flustered and confused,” the mum said, as she explained the café was “portable”.

However, after the interview concluded, the mum banged on the door and asked Jane what the problem was.

The mum admits she lost her temper outside the pub while her daughter sobbed in the car.

She added: “My daughter's confidence has been truly knocked.

“If anything you could have advised her and helped her if she was not what you were looking for.

“You shouldn’t be judged on what you’re wearing or how you look."
