Teenager questioned by police after cat suffers horrific injuries

A teenager has been questioned by police after a pet cat was killed in Co Armagh.

It is understood that the cat died after suffering a ‘crushed skull’ in an attack at a house in the Lurgan area last weekend.

Carla Lockhart, an MLA in the area, condemned the “senseless act of cruelty” and said it “had the potential to have lasting repercussions for” any individual involved.

The DUP rep added: “Generally we are a country of animal lovers and right minded people will be horrified at the suffering caused to the cat. We need to ensure that the punishment does fit the crime in these circumstances and that those who are found guilty face the full rigours of the law.

“The police are dealing with this matter as is right. No one should take the law into their own hands or be minded to act outside the law.”

In a statement, police told Belfast Live: “A 16 year old male appeared in Lisburn Magistrates Court on 01 April charged with a number of offences, including assault on police and disorderly behaviour following an incident at an address in Lurgan on 30 March.

“He was also interviewed and subsequently released on police bail on suspicion of a number of other offences, including arson with intent to endanger life, causing unnecessary suffering to animals and criminal damage.”
