Teenager leading a campaign for addiction detox centre in Derry prepares for community rally

Derry teenager Tamzin White has been leading the campaign for a detox centre in Derry since the passing of her mother.

In speaking to MyDerry previously, Tamzin said if a specialist centre had been available to help her mother break her addiction, she would still be here today.

Tamzin explained: "My mum wanted to overcome her addiction more than anything. It frightened her too much to face the lonely journey of getting treatment elsewhere without having me able to visit. If a detox centre had been open in Derry she would have went."

Tamzin set up the Derry Demands A Detox Centre Facebook page and has previously met with Health Minister Robin Swann.

Now billboards have been put up on various residential areas as well as behind Free Derry Corner, stating that "no family in Derry has been untouched by addiction".

Local political representatives have come out in support of Tamzin's campaign and are encouraging the public to join a socially distanced rally in the Guildhall Square on August 21 at 2pm.

Speakers include campaign leader Tamzin, Derry Mayor Graham Warke, Sinn Fein MLA Karen Mullan and Aontú Councillor Emmet Doyle.

Tamzin said: “I want to encourage everyone to attend the rally to show the widespread support this campaign has and to move it to the next level.

"We would ask that everyone observes the public health advice in place and look out for further details from the campaign on our Facebook page."

Cllr Emmet Doyle said: “This rally will give the people of Derry the opportunity to show their support for this vital campaign. We have been working for many months to pull together research that we believe demonstrates the need for a detox provision in the city.

"It is now time for those who can green light this project to see how fiercely our people will stand up for it.”

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin shared his support for the campaign on Facebook and encouraged the public to come out. He said: "Solidarity with Tamzin White and the campaign for a detox centre in Derry.

"Feet on the street August 21!"
