The other rider, also 18, sustained serious injuries in the incident.

Merseyside Police said the suspected stolen motorcycle is believed to have been travelling in tandem along Booker Avenue with another scrambler, neither of which had their lights on, when the crash occurred.

The Tiguan car had two children, aged nine and 11, on board although they are not understood to have suffered serious injuries.

A police spokeswoman said: "Witnesses have reported that neither of the bikes had any lights on. The second bike stopped initially and then made off towards Mather Avenue."

House-to-house enquiries are being carried out and CCTV opportunities are also being explored.
