Urging anyone with details to contact officers, Detective Inspector Jennie Beck said: “We initially believe that this incident followed an altercation within a group of people close to the steps to St Johns Shopping Centre.

"If you saw the incident or anyone making off, or captured anything on CCTV, dashcam or other devices, please come forward and we will take action.

“At this stage it is unclear exactly what happened, but we are gathering evidence and will do all we can to find those responsible. We have seen first-hand the devastation that knife crime causes in Merseyside, so it is vital that anyone with information tells us.”

*Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police via Twitter (@MerPolCC), Facebook (Merseyside Police CC) or by calling 101 and quoting incident reference 1056 of December 29.
