Teenager gouges out hotel worker's eyes after 'going berserk' on family holiday

Police have arrested a teenager who allegedly gouged a hotel worker’s eyes out after going berserk during a holiday with his family in Spain.

A tourist at the four-star hotel in the Costa Dorada resort of Cambrils was also hurt after trying to restrain the unnamed 17-year-old.

The youngster is said to have assaulted a night porter after he responded to a call for help from the boy’s mum who had been attacked in their second-floor room.

Local reports said he had his eyes gouged out during a brutal attack around midnight at the Estival El Dorado Hotel.

As well as the hotel guest who tried to intervene, a friend of the boy’s mum was also hurt in the incident.

The hotel worker, a 62-year-old who has not been identified, was rushed to Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona where his condition today was described as “serious.”

As well as the injuries to his eyes, he is also understood to have suffered wounds to his face and body where he was kicked and punched repeatedly.

Police had to sedate the youngster when they arrived at the scene shortly before 1am today after he allegedly tried to snatch one of the officer’s guns from his holster.

The teenager, who was held on suspicion of attempted murder, was transferred to hospital so he could undergo tests and will remain in police custody pending a report by youth prosecutors.

It is thought he could have suffered a psychotic episode and sources say he had been involved in previous incidents over the past year.

There has not yet been any official comment from the hotel.

It comes after a woman who gouged out both her eyes while under the influence of drugs was given a pair of prosthetic eyeballs.

Kaylee Muthart was just 20 when she ripped out her eyes during a meth-induced psychotic episode in 2018.

Medics told her she would be blind for life as they were unable to reattach them.

But Kaylee, from South Carolina in the US, said the shocking incident prompted her to go into rehab.

She thought she could save the world from ending if she removed her eyes, she said after it happened.

After receiving her first pair of prosthetic eyes, she said: “I just wanted to appear more normal to the outside world.”

Boyfriend Alex George, 42, said the moment "melted his heart", saying: “She was never any different to me, but I know she’s wanted this for a very long time and I’m so happy she has this now."

He described his girlfriend as an "upbeat and positive person", and said the eyes had made her "extra happy".
