Teenager goes drinking for bank holiday night out - then takes 'shortcut' home by walking along the M6

You've had a heavy bank holiday weekend and want to get to bed as quickly as possible. We've all been there.

But one teenager took it new - dangerous - extremes to hit the sack quickly following a night out with pals.

While most of us would jump in a taxi, the 18-year-old decided to use the hard shoulder of the M6 motorway - on foot.

North West Motorway Police first informed drivers on Monday morning that they'd received reports of a 'child' walking on a live lane of the busy motorway near Warrington.

A public warning issued on Twitter said: "Taking reports of a child walking in lane one of M6 southbound between J23-22.

"Approach with care and follow instructions on gantry."

But after being contacted by a number of confused drivers, police confirmed that the child had in fact been a teenage male making his way home from a night out.

They wrote: "Update, we were initially advised of a child walking in a live lane. We are with an 18-year-old male who was using the hard shoulder as a shortcut to getting home quicker.

"Thanks for your concern."

A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police confirmed there had been no injuries and that the male had received a warning as a result of the incident.
