Teenager found dead after disappearing while swimming in river amid hot weather

A teenager has been found dead after he went missing while swimming in a river amid a spell of hot weather.

The 19-year-old, from Barnstaple, disappeared in a river at King's Nympton, near Chulmleigh, in Devon at around 4.20pm on Monday.

A large search involving a police helicopter, dogs and several firefighting crews was launched, and the A3777 was closed in both directions due to the size of the emergency response.

He was pronounced dead after his body was pulled from the water shortly before 11pm

His death is not being treated as suspicious, DevonLive reports.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at 4.20pm yesterday, 14 September, following concerns for the welfare of an 19-year-old man who had gone missing while swimming in the river at King's Nympton.

"A major search operation was launched involving police officers, the police helicopter, police dog unit, the fire service and ambulance service.

"The man, from Barnstaple, was recovered from the water around 10.50pm.

"He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"His next of kin have been informed."
