Teenager fighting for her life in hospital after being hit by car in Sunderland

A teenager is fighting for her life after she was hit by a car in Sunderland.

The pedestrian suffered multiple injuries in the collision on Wessington Way, near Sainsbury's, which happened at about 4.20pm on Wednesday.

The road was closed in both directions as emergency services worked to treat the patient before an air ambulance took her to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she remains in a serious condition.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 4.25pm to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Wessington Way in Sunderland.

“We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, a specialist paramedic, two rapid response paramedics, two crews from our hazardous area response team and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

“One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by air in a serious condition with multiple injuries.”

There were closures on surrounding roads as police continued investigations at the scene, including on the A1290 and the A1231.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said officers are now appealing for witnesses.

They added: "Emergency services attended the scene to help the pedestrian, a female in her teens.

"She was transported by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she is being treated for potentially life threatening injuries.

Witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage should contact Northumbria Police by calling 101 quoting log 770 19/02/20.
