Teenager facing charges after alleged stabbing on East Maitland train

A TEENAGER will face court in Broadmeadow after allegedly stabbing a 16-year-old in the abdomen on a Hunter line train.

The 16-year-old was arrested and charged on Thursday night after an injured boy alighted at Victoria Street station, approaching a train guard for help.

Police will allege two boys, both 16, were on a train between Beresfield and Maitland about 7.20pm when they became involved in a verbal argument.

It is alleged that one of the boys produced a knife and stabbed the other in the abdomen.

After the injured boy raised the alarm, a train guard locked down the train and police were called.

Port Stephens-Hunter Police District officers attended, entered the carriage and arrested a 16-year-old aboard.

He was taken to Maitland police station and charged with wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless wounding and having custody of a knife in a public place. He was refused bail and will face Broadmeadow Children's Court on Friday.

Police said the injured youth underwent surgery and was in a stable condition.
