Teenager faces court charged with AFL grand final day stabbing murder in Melbourne

An 18-year-old man has appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court charged with the murder of another teenager after an altercation in Kings Park in Melbourne's west last month.

Joshua Horton is accused of stabbing Maaka Hakiwai, 17, on September 28.

Mr Hakiwai later died in hospital from his injuries.

Mr Horton was also charged with intentionally causing serious injury to 18-year-old Nate Hakiwai, the dead man's brother.

Emergency workers were called to Kings Park, about 20 kilometres north-west of the CBD, about 2:30pm on AFL grand final day.

At the time, police said the two males had been found with stab wounds on Main Road West.

Charge sheets reveal Mr Horton allegedly stole a Los Angeles Kings cap worn by Nate Hakiwai, while armed with a knife.

Magistrate Angela Bolger remanded Mr Horton in custody to reappear in February next year when a committal hearing will be held.
