Teenager dies with coronavirus as UK hospital deaths rise

A 15-year-old patient was among the 537 coronavirus hospital deaths confirmed today (February 5).

The grim death toll brings the overall number of people who have died after testing positive for Covid to 74,786.

However, today is the lowest Friday number of fatalities since New Year's Day.

The South West once again recorded the fewest deaths, with 52. The Midlands confirmed the highest total of 122.

Patients were aged between 15 and 100 years old. All except 21 (aged 45 to 98 years old) had known underlying health conditions.

The dates of deaths ranged from 17 December to 4 February, with the majority being on or after 1 February.

The number of deaths of patients with Covid-19 by region are as follows:

  • East of England - 77
  • London - 92
  • Midlands - 122
  • North East & Yorkshire - 61
  • North West - 69
  • South East – 64
  • South West - 52

Deaths in Somerset and Bath have remained high throughout this week, falling slower than Bristol and Gloucestershire.

On Thursday, 26 fatalities were confirmed in all settings in Somerset and Bath.

And 13 more people died across Bristol and its neighbouring areas after contracting coronavirus on February 4.

Four further deaths were confirmed in Gloucestershire on the same day.
