Teenager dies in hospital days after Cammeray car crash

A teenage passenger involved in a crash in Sydney's North Shore last weekend has died in hospital overnight.

The 18-year-old man suffered critical injuries after the car allegedly driven by a 16-year-old unlicensed driver ploughed into a tree in Cammeray on Sunday afternoon.

He was undergoing treatment at Royal North Shore Hospital but died on Thursday night, police said.

The teenager was seated in the back-seat of the Holden Commodore carrying another 16-year-old girl and two 17-year-old boys, who remain in hospital.

While some were in induced comas, all are now in a stable condition, police said.

Police were pursuing the car after investigating the alleged assault of a 17-year-old, who officers believe had organised to meet the teenagers.

They said they called off the second pursuit before the car crashed on West Street and burst into flames.

Neighbours said police arrived shortly after the crash and smashed windows in order to pull the teenagers out.

"This is a horrific incident which is likely to have lifelong consequences for all involved," Detective Superintendent Paul Devaney said.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues.
