Teenager dies after road crash with ambulance in middle of night

A TEENAGER has died after a crash involving an ambulance on a major road.

Traffic officers are appealing for witnesses after the fatal collision on the A78 in North Ayrshire.

The incident happened shortly after 2.30am on Monday, July 28, on the road's southbound carriageway between the Pennyburn Roundabout and the junction with the B779 at Kilwinning.

It involved an e-scooter and an ambulance. The 18-year-old rider of the e-scooter, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers said no one from the ambulance was injured in the incident. Following the crash, the road was closed for several hours. It has since reopened.

Sergeant Jim Dewar said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died and everyone affected by this crash.

“Our enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing, and I would urge anyone with information or who may have dashcam footage from around the time to get in touch.

“If you can help, please call 101, quoting reference 0324 of 28 July, 2025.”

Correction: Police initially gave the teenager's age as 19. He was 18.
