A 17-year-boy died after a group of children touched an overhead power line with a metal pole, according to police.
The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene in Runshall Hall Lane in Euxton, Lancashire, on Saturday evening.
Two other teenagers were not seriously hurt.
The Lancashire Post reported that the boy was electrocuted trying to retrieve a football from a pond at Euxton Villa FC’s ground.
The football club, which is in the West Lancashire League, tweeted: “Due to a tragic incident over the weekend please note the ground and the car park will remain closed on Monday 8th March - Our thoughts are with all those affected.”
Police, paramedics and the fire service all attended the incident close to Euxton Villa FC’s ground, around three miles from Chorley, shortly after 6pm.
Lancashire Police said in a statement: "An investigation is underway and remains in the early stages but it is believed the children may have touched an overhead electrical line with a metal pole."
Insp John McNamara of Lancashire Police said the boy's family were being supported by specially trained officers.
He added: “This appalling incident has led to the tragic death of a young man and my thoughts are first and foremost with his family and loved ones at this time.
“An investigation is underway and remains in its very early stages but I would appeal to anyone who has any information to get in touch with us by calling 101 and quoting log 1241 of March 6th.”
