Teenager dies after falling on shard of glass which pierced her heart outside home

A teenage girl has died in a freak accident after falling on a shard of broken glass outside her home which pierced her heart.

The 15-year-old is said to have been with her mum when the tragedy occurred.

The shard of glass that killed her came from a door leading into the apartment block where she lived.

A pane of glass in the door is thought to have cracked as it slammed shut, with one of two shards entering her back as she fell and affecting her heart.

Paramedics sent to the scene could do nothing to save her.

A routine police investigation is ongoing into the incident, which happened around 1pm yesterday in Elche south of Alicante on the Costa Blanca.

A spokesman for the National Police, whose officers are preparing a report for a local court, confirmed a probe was underway.

A well-placed source said the girl was Spanish but was unable to confirm local reports she was with her mum when she lost her life.

The spokesman said: “Everything is pointing to this being a freak and tragic accident but a post-mortem will have to take place as part of a full investigation.

“Forensic experts have found no initial signs of any criminality.

“It appears at this stage an internal entry door in the apartment block where she lived cracked and the youngster fell and a shard of glass pierced her heart.

“Paramedics could do nothing to save her life.

“What exactly caused the door to crack will be a matter for the investigation and it’s not something I can talk about at this stage.”

The apartment where the teenager lived is a central flat a short walk from Elche City Hall.

Elche is the third most-populated city in the Valencian Community, behind Valencia and Alicante.

It has a population of around 200,000 inhabitants and is famous for its thousands of palm trees.

It lies around five miles from the sea and is a short drive from many of the Costa Blanca’s most popular British holiday and expat resorts.
