Teenager dies after collision between car and pedestrian on A694 in Gateshead

An 18-year-old man has died after a crash between a car and a pedestrian in Gateshead.

Police received a report of a collision on the A694 at Derwenthaugh Park, Blaydon, at the junction with Swalwell Cricket Club, shortly before 10pm on Saturday December 12.

Critical care nurses who came across the collision worked hard to save the man until paramedics arrived to take over.

Sadly the man, aged 18, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle and all the vehicle passengers remained at the scene and have been assisting officers with the investigation.

Sgt Matt Sykes of Northumbria Police ’s Motor Patrols Department said: “This collision has devastatingly resulted in the death of an 18-year-old man.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family at this incredibly difficult time and they will continue to be supported by our specialist officers.

“This is clearly a tragic time for them and I would ask that their privacy be respected.”

He added: “An investigation has been launched and we are committed to establishing the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“I am now appealing to anybody who was in the area around that time to come forward with any information or dashcam footage, as it may prove crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the collision.”
