Teenager dies after car crashes into building in Burnage during police chase

A man believed to be in his late teens has died after a car crashed into a building during a police chase in Burnage.

The vehicle ploughed into a property at the junction of Burnage Lane and Lane End Road on Sunday night.

The crash happened shortly after police attempted to stop the car on Burnage Lane at around 9.25pm.

Two men inside the vehicle were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

One of the men, believed to be in his late teens, has since died.

The other casualty remains in hospital.

Police say road closures are still in place around the crash scene.

A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and an investigation into the collision has be launched.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Chadwick, of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, said: “I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family of the person who has passed away following the collision in Burnage last night.

“The response to the incident is still ongoing and there are a number of road closures in place in the nearby area, with the scene likely to remain for some time.

“In line with our usual policy with incidents of this nature, we have made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and they have made a decision to launch an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said last night: “We were called just before 9.30pm to reports of a road traffic collision.

“Two fire engines and a technical response unit attended.

“We rescued two people from a vehicle and stabilised the vehicle.

“The two fire engines have left the scene and the technical response unit are still there.”
