Teenager detained under Mental Health Act after a mum was stabbed in front of her young son in south Manchester

A teenager has been detained under the Mental Health Act after a mum was stabbed in front of her five-year-old son.

The mother and her child were walking along Rudheath Avenue, in Withington, last Saturday afternoon (August 29) when the attack happened.

The victim was approached by a man wielding a knife at around 1.30pm.

He stabbed her before making off on foot onto Bromborough Avenue and then continuing in the direction of Whitchurch Road.

The mum was taken to hospital with stab wounds to her leg.

Her child was assessed by paramedics at the scene, but had no visible injuries.

Police launched an attempted murder investigation but described the attack as “an isolated incident”.

On Monday, Greater Manchester Police reported that a 17-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The force says he has since been detained until the Mental Health Act.
