Teenager charged with murder of man brutally killed in church grounds

A teenager from Kirkby was charged over the murder of a man brutally killed in the grounds of a church.

Emergency services were called to Wigan Parish Church shortly before 7.50pm on Thursday, August 6.

There 34-year-old Steven McMyler was found with serious injuries after being kicked in the head.

He tragically died a short time later before Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launched an investigation and began the hunt for those responsible.

Now, a teenager from Kirkby has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Following a CCTV appeal issued by officers, a number of males were arrested in connection with the murder.

Three men – aged 30, 19 and 18 – were arrested on suspicion of murder and released under investigation.

A 19-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy have since been arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Wednesday night, GMP confirmed that Jordan Short, of Rushey Hey Road in Kirkby, has been charged with the murder and will appear at Wigan Magistrates Court on Thursday, August 13.

The 13-year-old boy is still being questioned by police.

Mr McMyler was described as having "a heart of gold" by his devastated family.

His loved ones paid tribute to him just days after he was killed in an emotional statement.

They said: ""Steven was an extremely likeable lad and everyone who came across him loved him as much as we all did.

"He was a popular lad and he lit the room up as soon as he walked in.

"Everybody thought the world of him as he had a heart of gold.

"We can't believe what has happened and we are struggling to come to terms with this terrible tragedy."
