A teenage boy is in hospital after being stabbed during a brawl in a McDonald's car park in Adelaide's north-east last night.

Police say a large fight broke out outside the store at the Westfield Tea Tree Plaza shopping centre on North East Road at Modbury about 11:00pm.

The 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police initially said he suffered a life-threatening stab wound but they now say his condition is stable and no longer believed to be life-threatening.

He first went to the nearby Modbury Hospital and was then transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for overnight surgery.

Police say they have positive lines of inquiry.

Crime scene investigators attended and examined the scene overnight.
