A teenager has been arrested after a 48-year-old man died after he was punched outside a nightclub.

The 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after the man’s death in Reading on Friday night.

Police officers and paramedics rushed to Matchbox nightclub, at about 11.30pm, after reports of two men “in an altercation”.

Officers said the victim died after he was punched and fell to the floor, hitting his head.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Sally Spencer, of Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, said: “I understand that this news will be a concern to people but I would like to reassure them that a thorough investigation is underway and that we have made an arrest in connection with the incident.

“We believe this was an isolated incident in which the men involved were known to each other.

“I would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time this occurred, and who may have witnessed an assault taking place.

“If you saw this, or have any information which you think could help our investigation, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please call the Thames Valley Police non-emergency number on 101, quoting reference number 1717 (12/4).”

Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or make a report online.
