A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the murder of a man in Derry on Saturday night.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed he had been arrested after a fatal assault on a 24-year-old man at about 10.25pm in the Milldale Crescent area of the city.
The injured man was taken to Altnagelvin hospital, but later died.
The PSNI said a second 24-year-old had also sustained head injuries in the assault, but they were not believed to be serious.
DCI Michael Harvey confirmed that a youth aged 16 had been arrested shortly after midnight in Derry.
He urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
“This has resulted in the tragic death of a young man, therefore I would ask anyone in the community who knows anything about the circumstances leading up to this incident, or saw or heard an altercation in the Milldale Crescent area, to contact police and give us this information,” he said.
The Sinn Féin deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness, said the incident had shocked the local community.
“The death of this young man in these circumstances is a tragedy that has shocked the local area,” he said.
“There is a live police investigation into this incident and that should be allowed to go ahead.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the man who was killed at this difficult time.”
