Police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a "horrifying” crash caught on CCTV which saw a pedestrian knocked down and her pet dog killed.
West Midlands Police said the youth had been identified as a potential driver of the vehicle after a huge response to appeals for information and taken into custody on Friday.
Footage released by the force on Wednesday and described by officers as "horrifying" showed the moment the victim and her pet dog were hit by a car in Doe Bank Lane, Great Barr, Birmingham, on July 22.
The force said in a statement confirming the arrest: “We’ve had a phenomenal response to our plea for information.
“The footage has been shared thousands of times and it’s been watched by millions of people.
“Lots of you have been in touch with really helpful information, and we’re now following up on a number of leads.
“Earlier today we arrested a 17-year-old boy from the Kingstanding area of Birmingham after he was identified as the potential driver of the Renault Clio by members of the public.
“He’s been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and is currently in police custody where he will be questioned by investigating officers.”
The force also asked for anyone with information concerning the incident to come forward.
