Teenager arrested after terrifying hit and run in Stockport

A 19-year-old has been arrested after a teenager was forced to cling to the roof of a car during a terrifying hit-and-run in Stockport.

The crash took place on St Ann's Road North in Heald Green at around 7.20pm last Sunday (April 25).

Azaan Darr, 18, was taken to hospital after a Volkswagen Golf travelling at 30mph 'mounted the pavement' and hit him, his dad Atif told the M.E.N.

The car fled the scene.

Detectives launched an investigation and today (Saturday) arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of section 18 assault.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Constable Robert Shakespeare of GMP's Stockport district, said: "We recognise the concern and worry this incident has created in the area and I want to reassure the public that we are doing all we can to identify the responsible party.

"Thankfully the man did not sustain any serious injuries but the outcome of this collision could have been far worse.

"Although one male has been arrested in connection with this incident I would stress that our investigation is very much ongoing and I appeal to anyone who may have been in the area at the time - or has dash-cam footage - to get in touch with police as soon as possible."

After the incident, Atif Darr said: “A car stopped down in the middle of St Ann's Road North, near the hospice, and started shouting abuse at Azaan and his friend.

“They drove off and must have done a u-turn, and came back and did the same thing. It happened three times — but on the third time they drew alongside and Azaan opened the door and said ‘why don’t you say it to me like a man?’

“The car then went out of view again, and [came back] on the other side of the road. It crossed the white line and mounted the pavement and he just carried on.”

Mr Darr said that the car was travelling at around 30mph when it mounted the kerb, leading him to jump up on to the bonnet.

“Then, somehow, with the speed of the car, Azaan contorted so that he was holding on to the pillars of the door through an open window, and was facing the same way as the driver,” the father added.

“The driver was trying to shake him off the roof by weaving, and then he thought he should get off quickly.”

Azaan, who practices mixed martial arts, landed on the pavement, and suffered bruising on his lower back and hip, as well as ligament damage in one of his fingers.

He was taken to hospital for X-rays, but doctors did not find any breakages.

Anyone with information, or dash-cam footage, should contact police on 0161 856 9625 quoting incident 2430 of 25/04/21 or email 14085@gmp.pnn.police.uk.

Alternatively, reports can be made anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
